Secure Passage Announces Firewall Configuration Awareness for SIEM Solutions

Secure Passage’s FireMon Combines Knowledge of Firewall Configuration with Corporate Security Policy to Generate Security Alerts for SIEM Solutions

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — 22 July, 2010 — Secure Passage, the leading provider of firewall and network device management solutions  announces FireMon Security Event integration with leading Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solutions.  For the first time, SIEM solutions such as ArcSight’s ESM and RSA’s enVision will be sent not only critical and timely security events but also full knowledge of firewall configurations.

Although SIEM solutions already receive thousands of events, including events from firewalls, these events are received and evaluated without knowledge of the firewalls' configuration.  With a change event, for example, it is impossible for SEIM solutions to know if the change is effective or ineffective, safe or risky, compliant or a violation.  Without more knowledge, change events become noise that SEIM solutions ignore.

To understand the implications of changes to the firewalls, it is necessary to understand the behaviour of the firewalls.  Using FireMon’s policy analysis and security framework, it is possible to understand the implications of change and identify changes that represent mistakes, increased risk or compliance violations.  Including this policy-aware information in the event enables quicker response to security threats, making the SIEM solution even more valuable as a security event management solution.

“Our partnership with Secure Passage has highlighted the importance of educating the SIEM market that there is a better and more accurate way,” said Robert Cavan, managing director, Redstone Managed Solutionss.  “FireMon’s ability to provide SIEM solutions with firewall configuration data to get a more accurate view of your security operations is another reason we are pleased to be working with Secure Passage to bring innovative solutions to the market.”

“The demand for firewall management has grown significantly in recent years, driven by increased complexity and new compliance requirements.  These requirements have also increased demand for the results of firewall management analysis beyond the firewall team, making it strategically important for FireMon to integrate into the enterprise security ecosystem,” said Jody Brazil, co-founder and president of Secure Passage.

“The Security Information and Event Management solutions on the market today provide a good window into security operations and events in the enterprise.  However, SIEM solutions are only as good as the information they are provided.  By combining our configuration awareness and analysis capabilities with SIEM solutions' monitoring and reporting capabilities, our customers are able to get a more complete picture of enterprise security operations,” continued Jody Brazil.
